Over the next five years, the coffee industry is undergoing significant changes as the SCRPI (Specialty Coffee Retail Price Index) is gradually replaced by a system that prices coffee by the metric ton. The familiar 60kg jute bags will be replaced by FIBC, which can hold 1 ton of coffee. This substantial shift in coffee storage and transportation will impact the market, altering how we purchase coffee and the prices we pay. Although this change may seem concerning, suggesting that smaller bags will no longer be available, this is not the case. We will still be able to buy coffee in smaller quantities; the change primarily affects storage, large-scale transportation, and pricing. As this transition unfolds over the next three years, it is expected to lead to higher valuations and benefits for farmers globally. Regions like Colombia will see their coffee achieve new price highs, placing it in the premium category. Overall, the price of coffee is anticipated to decrease by 15-20%, benefiting everyone from farmers, roasters, and consumers.
